The Mississippi INBRE Network

The mission of the Mississippi IDeA Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence project (MS-INBRE) is to enhance the biomedical research capacity of Mississippi by:

  • developing a multidisciplinary State-wide network of faculty, students and technical staff
  • training and mentoring faculty and students, particularly at undergraduate institutions
  • developing an efficient pipeline to encourage students to continue in health-related careers
  • building a state-wide bioinformatics network
  • providing critical research infrastructure
  • This State-wide network includes all five research-intensive institutions, six Partner Undergraduate Institutions and eight Outreach Institutions. This network consists of:

  • The University of Southern Mississippi
    (USM, the Lead institution)
  • The University of Mississippi (UM)
  • Mississippi State University (MSU)
  • Jackson State University (JSU)
  • The University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC)
  • These institutions work with six Partner Undergraduate Institutions (PUI):

  • Alcorn State University (ASU)
  • Millsaps College (MC)
  • Mississippi College (MSC)
  • Mississippi University for Women (MUW)
  • Mississippi Valley State University (MVSU)
  • Tougaloo College (TC)

Additionally, the network reaches out to eight that include most community colleges in Mississippi. The MS-INBRE represents the largest network of institutions in Mississippi with the mission to promote biomedical research and training in the State.

The MS-INBRE supports multidisciplinary research network with scientific themes in the areas of cancer, cardiovascular disease and infectious disease. As the state with the greatest incidence of cardiovascular deaths in the nation (50th rank), 46th rank for cancer and 35th rank for infectious diseases – these areas are of great interest to our students and of vital importance to Mississippi and its health disparities populations. The MS-INBRE continues to focus on enhancing the participation of African-Americans – a group severely underrepresented as biomedical researchers in the nation.

Major funding for the Mississippi IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence comes from the National Institutes of Health – National Institute of General Medical Sciences
